The global LGBTQ + BL streaming service, GagaOOLala and the Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA) hosted the first ever “Taiwan LGBTQ + BL Mixer Night Out” along with Taiwanese production houses, YOIISZ Studio and Soul'Chill Art Studio during the Asia TV Forum in Singapore on Thursday, 8 December 2022, where the streaming service unveiled exciting plans for its upcoming LGBTQ+ and BL projects for 2023. This social event brought together over 120 professionals from the media, entertainment and content industries to exchange and trade ideas, hoping to build cross-industry partnerships and bring Taiwan's LGBTQ + BL content to the world.
2022 has been a breakout year for BL film and TV; in Asia alone, production companies and streaming services have combined to release nearly 200 BL titles. Meanwhile, Singapore's government has just repealed Section 377A, officially decriminalizing sex between men. In celebration of this momentous occasion, and in coordination with the Asia TV Forum & Market, GagaOOLala, the largest LGBTQ+ and BL streaming service in the world, partnered with Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA) to host the first ever “Taiwan LGBTQ + BL Mixer Night Out”, where we unveiled our exciting 2023 plans for LGBTQ+ and BL content to general acclaim. This social event was attended by over 120 industry professionals and brought together government representatives, film and music producers, media, sponsors, distributors, advertising agencies, artists, creators, influencers, and more to mingle and exchange ideas, hoping to build cross-industry partnerships and bring Taiwan's LGBTQ + BL content onto the global platform. In addition to GagaOOLala, YOIISZ Studio and Soul'Chill Art Studio were also present to share in the festivities.
According to Jay Lin, CEO of Portico Media and founder of GagaOOLala, "Founded in 2017, GagaOOLala has gradually expanded worldwide to become Taiwan's first home-grown streaming service with truly global reach. Right now, our catalogue contains more than 1,600 titles of queer content, and we've produced and sold more than 60 original titles. As of 2022, we have more than 2.5 million members, as well as partnerships with 30 other streaming services. We've accomplished great things and won attention across Taiwan, Asia, and the world. In 2023, we will be releasing Light: The Series, Boys Like Boys, Papa & Daddy: The Animation, Fragrance of the First Flower 2, and First Note of Love, all exciting original IPs with cross-industry partnerships.”
2022 has been a year of unprecedented growth for GagaOOLala as the Taiwanese streamer has witnessed a 96% increase in the registrations on its platform along with an astounding 218% rise in the watch time recorded courtesy of the service hitting over a million monthly active users. Elsewhere, there was also an equally impressive surge in the total number of GagaOOLala’s subscriptions which increased by 99%, with members signing up from 191 different countries, 91% of whom subscribed for the first time in 2022. Of the top 10 markets for the platform, five are ranked outside Asia with the US being its number one market.
Maxine Hsieh, director of Soul'Chill Art Studio, said, "I myself am a passionate BL fan. Two years ago I had the sudden impulse to make my own BL series, and that was how Innocent was born. I particularly want to thank those before me who have put so much work into LGBT TV and film in Taiwan, for smoothing my way on my journey from viewer to creator. There are so many stories I want to tell. The one I'm currently working on is Pray in Love (祈安), and that's the story I'm sharing with you today."
Sammi Pan, producer at Yoiisz Studio, said, "Many thanks to TAICCA and Portico Media for inviting me to be here today to discuss and celebrate LGBTQ and BL TV and film. I'm truly grateful for this opportunity to share our work and our future plans with all of you. We hope to use our many years of experience in film and TV to communicate with other creators and understand the current state of the market, so that we can develop and produce high-quality content for traditional theater release as well as online streaming."
Creative industries striving to bring Taiwanese content to the rest of the world are joined in their mission by TAICCA. Founded in 2019, it has been unstinting in its efforts to bring Taiwan's LGBTQ+ and BL content to the rest of the world, becoming a major force in global markets.
