About Us
Originally founded in 2005 as an importer of international TV channels and programs in Taiwan, Portico Media today stands as a dynamic media and entertainment hub specializing in the spheres of channel aggregation and distribution, content creation, production, marketing and delivery, and global OTT services. It is the leading aggregator and distributor of linear TV channels and programming in the nation with over 20 world-renowned satallite channels with agreements with NBCUniversal Comcast, ViacomCBS, A&E, Rock Entertainment, ABC Australia, Al Jazeera, CinemaWorld, DW, FashionTV, and more.
In 2015 Portico Media launched “HahaTai”, the first of a series of independent media brands focused on digital production, distribution, marketing, and curation. Aimed at becoming Taiwan’s one-stop funniest online video destination, the YouTube channel began producing weekly original sketches, viral videos, and real-time street interviews finding new and interesting ways to portray the everyday Taiwanese life and humor. As of 2021, HahaTai has over 1 million followers, 60 million video views, and 80 million audience reach making it an inseparable part of the current day Taiwanese online cultural zeitgeist. Likewise, in 2016, the second digital brand by Portico Media, DramaQueen, was born bringing the latest entertainment news from the US and Europe and the latest releases from the major streaming platforms to Taiwan.
As a company that believes in giving back to the community, Portico Media has always stood for and championed the values of diversity, inclusion, and equality and sees it as an inseparable part of its identity. Thus, in its aim towards finding new ways to contribute to society and in particular the LGBTQ+ community, Portico Media co-founded the Taiwan International Queer Film Festival in 2014 making it the biggest queer film festival in the region at the time. However, after three editions of the festival, the company realized the queer film festival alone was not enough to bring the impact that it was trying to achieve. So, in an attempt to broaden the visibility and acceptance of queer people and provide easier access to LGBTQ+ stories locally and globally, Portico Media launched in Taiwan its own niche LGBTQ+ OTT streaming platform called GagaOOLala in January 2017. Only three years later, in May 2020, GagaOOLala was officially opened globally, and today, it proudly houses over 1,600 licensed and original LGBTQ+ and BL content from around the world.
The immense success and popularity of GagaOOLala with the LGBTQ+ community worldwide thereby prompted Portico Media to give birth in 2018 to GOL STUDIOS, Asia’s only queer cinema production platform, with up to 50 titles under its belt, and GagaTai and LalaTai, the largest gay and lesbian lifestyle and entertainment sites in the Chinese-speaking world.
All in all, Portico Media is an ambitious initiative to integrate the fluid online universe with the rigors of linear TV channel programming for which it synthesizes its distribution expertise, marketing experience, and creative production know-how to generate entertainment for its viewers and value for its partners.
